DNR Conducts Fish Surveys on Chequamegon Flowage
DNR Representative, Jeff Scheirer, reported obtaining a good sample of bluegill population abundance and size structure in the DNR early spring netting survey at ice-out and in their electrofishing survey on May 24. If the results show that the current status of the population does not meet the expectations of the Fisheries Management Plan, he will submit a proposal for more restrictive panfish harvest regulations. Member, Butch Podolak, submitted a resolution to the Conservation Congress at a hearing this spring.
Petitions signed by area fishermen and club members prompted this resolution.

Water Quality Grant
The Miller Dam Lake Association was awarded an Aquatic Invasive Species Control grant from the Department of Natural Resources. The total cost of the project will be $23,500 with $17, 625 coming from the grant and $5, 875 coming from the Lake Association. The goals of the grant are 1) to effectively manage specific invasive species 2) maintain and improve recreational opportunities 3) preserve native aquatic plants 4) protect and improve fish and wildlife habitat 5) evaluate water quality concerns, and 6) evaluate watershed and potential nutrient inputs. The kickoff meeting was held on June 12, with Tiffany Kleczewski representing Bonestroo (the engineering firm hired by MDLA) and Jim Kreitlow representing the DNR. Members attended a class to learn how to test water quality and water clarity on the lake. John Jenson has been taking samples and sending in the results. On July 12-14, Bonestroo and club members will be completing the plant survey and water quality sampling. The next step will be distributing a written survey to interested and/or affected persons and tabulating the results. At the end of the research period, it may be possible to apply for another grant to prepare and implement an aquatic plant management plan.

Appreciation Picnic
In appreciation for past support of the MDLA projects and fund raisers, all friends, family, and businesses are invited to attend the Appreciation Pot Luck Picnic and Annual Meeting to be held on Sunday, August 1, 2010. The social time will begin at 12:30 with the meeting to be held at 1:00 and the meal at 1:30. Pavilion Project
The pavilion expansion project is now complete.
Northfork Construction won the bid. The new pavilion has plenty of room
for family gatherings and will soon have 7 new picnic tables, 2 of which
will be specially made for wheel chair use. Persons wishing to use the
electricity must pay a small deposit to have it turned on. Call Carol
Mudgett at 668-5407 or Earl Chwala at 668-5661. The project funding came
from the County Power Line Grant, business and individual donations,
Taylor County Sportsman’s Club, and the MDLA.

Walleye Stocking
The MDLA, along with the Taylor County Sportsman’s
Club, Chelsea Conservation Club, and the Chequamegon Spur Time Chapter
of the National Wild Turkey Federation, purchased walleyes to stock the
Miller Dam Flowage. In early November members were on hand to see 2,700
walleye fingerlings released. The legal length limit for walleyes on the
flowage is 15 inches. Luke Klink reported this with photos in the Star
News.
